Sonata is a 16 feet sculpture. The title is a musical reference," says Barr of the piece. "And it is shaped like a musical notation. But most of my pieces are based on math and derived from something in nature. In what I do I start with what's underneath, the root pattern or the leaf pattern, the cells." Think of its compound curves as rooted in sea shells, says Barr. "You could see how I got there in the drawings I did- drawings that probably only I am interested in. I use the analogy that when people were inventing the airplane, they imitated a bird flying and all of the tests failed. It was only when they studied the structure of a bird that airline flight succeeded. "That is what my work does -- study the structure of the natural world."
